by Jerry Taylor

156 pg

A wonderfully intelligent, forceful book, bringing together masterful sermons by noted preacher Jerry Taylor and responses by world-renowned scholars.

Starting with ten of Taylor’s best sermons including "The Curse of Babel," "They That Wait upon the Lord," "Alive to God," and "Courageous Compassion,” go behind the scenes to rehear the specific circumstances that occasioned each message. Then learn as respected theorists, biblical scholars, and denominational leaders respond to each sermon, providing Scriptural analysis, notes on Taylor’s homiletic insights, and further reflections from the tradition of Black preaching."

Few books take the reader back to Bible as powerfully as Courageous Compassion, especially in our today’s politically divided landscape. Listen to Taylor and hear God speaking to you with clarity and conviction.

Jerry Taylor is associate professor of Bible and ministry at Abilene Christian University. He earned an M.Div. and D.Min. from Perkins School of Theology at Southern Methodist University. In 1996, Taylor was presented the Outstanding Leadership Award at the NAACP National Convention in Charlotte, North Carolina. He is one of the principal founders of the New Wineskins Ministers Retreat and the School of the Prophets. His gifted and powerful oratory, which reconstitutes the world Scripture imagines, has made him a frequent speaker at college and church conferences, and a popular lecturer at conventions, retreats, and gospel meetings. He and Pat have been married for nineteen years. They have two children, Alisha (15) and Jeremiah (11). The Taylors live in Abilene, Texas, and attend the Highland Church of Christ.

“Jerry Taylor’s prophetic voice comes through loud and clear in these pages. With skill and insight, he draws from the Scriptures that living Word that upholds and humbles us at the same time.”
--Cleophus J. LaRue, Princeton Theological Seminary

“Let me be blunt. I’d rather hear Jerry Taylor preach than anyone I’ve ever heard. His preaching is artistic, vivid, biblical, prophetic. His pace, imaginative suggestions, and use of Scripture—all are exemplary. These sermons (and the insightful reflections on them) are to be read with open Bibles and open hearts.”
--Mike Cope, Director of Ministry Outreach, Pepperdine University

“I am invigorated to read someone arguing so forthrightly, and with such deep passion, for something as elemental as dignity and respect for the poor. Jerry Taylor challenges the church to help the afflicted and influence the systems that cause the affliction. This book cannot be ignored by anyone who desires to understand the social thought of today.”
--Kenneth R. Greene, M.E.T.R.O. Christ’s Church, Cedar Hill, Texas
